The Hillside School has been providing a summer program for over ten years. The Summer Academy helps children bridge the gap between the end of one school year and the beginning of the next. Our teachers provide an environment that allows the students to feel success and builds confidence and self-esteem in the classroom. Parents are invited to observe their children during class time, a benefit that is unique to The Hillside School.
- The Hillside School offers two programs:
- The Summer Elementary Program (Kindergarten – Grade 6)
- The Study Skills Program (Grades 5 – 8)
The goal of our Summer Elementary Program (9:00 A.M. – 3:30 P.M.) is to build on what students have learned during the school year. Students review reading, writing, and math skills both in small group and individual settings. Computer technology is used to enrich both language arts and math skills. Learning strategies are presented, modeled and practiced. The recreational program in the afternoon focuses on listening skills, following directions, peer interactions and the development of social skills. Additional computer instruction is offered the second week of each session. The activities include keyboarding and instruction in assistive technology to improve writing skills.
The Study Skills Class (9:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M.) is aimed at helping students learn new academic strategies and strengthen their language arts skills. Organizational skills are emphasized and practiced daily during this two-week period. Students create a Strategy Stack, a compilation of strategies written on index cards. This Strategy Stack has proven to be a valuable resource for these students.
