Physical Education

Photos of Hillside School Students

Each student is provided with physical education twice weekly.  The physical education curriculum includes individual activities, team sports and lifetime sports.  Younger students primarily focus on visual/perceptual and gross motor skills, which prepare them for organized team sport skills as they progress to older grades.  Older students are involved in a wide variety of individual sports and team sports.  At Hillside students learn how physical fitness is a lifelong task.  They are taught the proper tools to implement into their daily lives.

The following are special activities directed by our physical education teacher:

  • Newcomb/Volleyball tournament for students grade 3 through 6
  • Jump for Heart – This huge event in which all students have fun is held during March. This event promotes community service by raising funds to support lifesaving heart and stroke research and educational programs while teaching physical fitness.
  • Walk Club – “The Flying Heels” - This club named by the students is conducted during recess time. Students walk on the playground on a designated course. This club motivates students to be fit, helps control body weight, burn off extra energy, improve school performance and build self-esteem.
  • Field Day – One of the highlights of the year! A theme adds to the excitement of the day. All students participate in a wide variety of activities, relays, and games.
