Through an integrated approach, the Arts program at Hillside encourages creative artistic expression. We emphasize and encourage the individual strengths of each student. Students are taught to visualize possibilities for thought and action, which in turn, create persistence and resilience. We strive to turn failure into success.
By working with a wide variety of media, students have the chance to discover their special talents. Students, who may not like to draw, may find they love to work with clay. Students are encouraged to use their distinct talents and abilities in order to build positive self-esteem. Students who may have difficulty conveying their thoughts and ideas verbally have an alternative way to express themselves.
Students are exposed to the musical arts. They become familiar with instruments and their sounds, music vocabulary, and various types of music. Students enjoy learning about the history of music and composers, and enjoy the opportunity to see several musical assemblies that include a variety of musical styles. The students also have the opportunity to experience a real orchestra – either here at Hillside or at Allentown Symphony Hall. Art projects are integrated with music and the academic subjects. For example, third grade students recently constructed ukuleles when studying a unit on Hawaii.
By using an integrated approach, the Arts curriculum enhances studies in math, science, social studies, reading and writing – as well as decision-making. Using a step-by-step process, we teach strategies to help students plan and follow through on assignments.
